CONTEMPLATING JESUS Scriptural Foundation: Psalm 63:2 (NABRE) “So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your power and glory.” — Psalm 63:3 (NABRE) The psalmist expresses a profound longing for God, seeking to behold His power and glory within the sanctuary. His words reveal the desire of the human soul to encounter the living God—not merely through knowledge or understanding, but through the intimacy of His presence. Contemplating Jesus invites the viewer into that sacred longing. The painting becomes an invitation to move beyond the distractions of daily life and enter into the stillness of prayer, where the heart turns its attention toward Jesus Christ. Throughout the Christian spiritual tradition, contemplation has been understood as a loving gaze of faith directed toward the Lord. It is not simply an exercise of the mind, but an opening of the heart to His grace, allowing His presence to transform the soul. The movement, textures, and contrasting forms within the painting suggest the spiritual journey from restlessness toward stillness, from searching toward encounter. What begins as a longing to see becomes an invitation to remain in His presence. In contemplation, words often give way to silence. The soul no longer seeks to explain the mystery of God, but rests before Him in faith, humility, and love. For those who pause before this painting, its invitation is simple: Be still, lift your heart toward the Lord, and allow your gaze to become a prayer. Deacon Rudy Calsoncin (Ret.)
