Scriptural Foundation: Song of Songs 8:6–7

Flames of Love gives visual expression to the artist’s remembrance of divine love during his journey beyond the body. Hearts, rising flames, and radiant color convey an encounter whose tenderness and intensity exceed what words can hold: the soul drawn toward God, its beloved, and longing for complete communion with Him.

The Song of Songs offers a language for this mystery. Love stands strong before death; its flames cannot be extinguished by deep waters. Contemplated through the eyes of faith, these words speak to the heart’s deepest longing—to receive the love of God without reserve and to answer Him with one’s entire being.

Within this painting, fire expresses purification. Divine love reaches into the hidden depths of the soul, touching whatever still needs healing, cleansing, and completion. The heart yields to the One who knows it completely. Every movement of surrender opens it more fully to His presence, preparing it for the communion for which it was created.

The ancient prayer Anima Christi gives voice to that surrender: “Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me. Blood of Christ, inebriate me.” Christ’s sacred Body and precious Blood draw the reflection into the mystery of His self-giving love. Here, holy inebriation expresses an overflowing fullness—a joy, warmth, and tenderness so profound that earthly happiness offers only a faint likeness.

For the artist, this remembrance carries an ecstasy beyond comparison: being enveloped in love, drawn beyond familiar limits, and filled with an overwhelming desire to remain in the Lord’s presence. The painting offers this personal testimony through color and symbol, inviting the viewer to contemplate the soul’s longing for its beloved.

The Anima Christi carries that longing to the threshold of eternity: “At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you.” These words become a prayer of trust in Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, whose love accompanies us through death and calls us into everlasting life.

Flames of Love invites us to remember our mortality with faith and to prepare our hearts for that call. Its rising flames express the prayer of a soul longing to be purified, filled with divine love, and welcomed into the communion of the saints—to love and praise the Lord forever.
