The Little Way of Trust and Love

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, affectionately known as the Little Flower, was born in France in 1873. Following the death of her mother when she was four, she experienced deep sorrow and increasing sensitivity. Within her family, faith nurtured her desire to belong completely to Jesus.

At fifteen, Thérèse entered the Carmelite monastery in Lisieux. Her days unfolded in prayer, community life, and ordinary duties. Within this hidden life, she discovered her “little way”: approaching God with a child’s confidence and offering everyday actions with love. Patiently bearing an irritation, showing kindness, and serving without recognition became opportunities to love Christ.

Her simplicity held remarkable spiritual depth. Thérèse recognized her weakness and placed her confidence in God’s mercy. She understood that holiness was accessible in daily life, through dependence on grace and a willing heart. Though she remained within the monastery, her love reached outward through prayer for missionaries and the salvation of souls.

During her final illness, she endured physical suffering and profound spiritual darkness while continuing to turn toward Jesus in faith. She died of tuberculosis in 1897, at twenty-four. Her autobiographical writings, published as Story of a Soul, carried her message far beyond the monastery. In 1997, Saint John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church.

Her life invites us to recognize the sacred possibilities within ordinary moments. A small kindness, a quiet prayer, or a patient act of service can become an offering to God. Through her little way, Thérèse continues to direct hearts toward Jesus with humility, confidence, and love.
