THE STRENGTH OF THE SACRAMENTSScriptural Foundation: Matthew 18:3 (NABRE)“Unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:3The Strength of the Sacraments presents the Christian life through the image of a child moving forward: small, dependent, and yet determined. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus places a child before His disciples and teaches that entrance into the Kingdom requires a turning of the heart toward childlike humility. The child in this painting becomes an image of that invitation to trust. The sweeping forms surrounding the child suggest a journey sustained by more than human strength. Life begins in dependence upon others, and the life of faith begins in dependence upon grace. The sacraments are not merely symbols of this grace; in the life of the Church, they are encounters with Christ, who acts through visible signs to strengthen, heal, forgive, and nourish His people. From the waters of Baptism, through the strengthening gift of Confirmation and the nourishment of the Holy Eucharist, the faithful are drawn more deeply into the life of Christ. When sin wounds the heart, Reconciliation opens the way to mercy. When illness and suffering bring weakness, the Anointing of the Sick offers the consolation and strength of the Lord. Holy Orders and Matrimony likewise give grace for lives poured out in faithful service and love. These gifts do not remove every burden or uncertainty. Rather, they accompany the pilgrim through them. The movement of the painting recalls how the believer is formed over time: grace received, trust learned, forgiveness embraced, and one faithful step following another. What appears to be a small movement becomes an image of the whole Christian pilgrimage. The child does not advance because every destination is visible or every difficulty has been overcome. The child moves forward in trust. So too the Christian, upheld by the grace of God, learns to walk toward the Kingdom with humility, perseverance, and an open heart.Ultimately, The Strength of the Sacraments is a meditation on the tenderness and power of divine grace. It invites us to become little before God, not in weakness of faith, but in the confidence of children who know they are loved and sustained by their Father. The way of the Kingdom begins with a childlike heart, and the journey is sustained by the grace of Christ.Deacon Rudy Calsoncin (Ret.)Prayer On Canvas Christian Foundation© 2026 Rudy Calsoncin.
