Scriptural Foundation: John 4:13–14 (NABRE) “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst.” —John 4:13–14 (excerpt) There are moments in the human journey when the soul finds itself alone, burdened by the circumstances of life, searching for something it cannot fully name. Such is the setting of Christ’s encounter with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, where an ordinary moment becomes an extraordinary revelation of divine mercy. In the Gospel of John, Jesus approaches a woman who has come to draw water in the heat of the day. What begins as a simple request for a drink becomes a conversation that reaches into the deepest places of the human heart. The Lord knows her history, her struggles, and the circumstances of her life. Yet He does not turn away from her. Instead, He offers something far greater than the water she came to draw: the living water of eternal life. The Well invites the viewer into this sacred encounter. Its atmosphere of solitude and contemplation reflects those quiet places where humanity often discovers its greatest need for God. The distant horizon, the presence of the Cross, and the surrounding landscape suggest that the journey of faith is not without suffering, uncertainty, or longing. Yet even in such places, the Lord is present. The Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus reveals a profound truth: no human life is beyond the reach of divine grace. Christ does not wait for perfection before extending His invitation. He meets us where we are, revealing the truth of our lives while offering the mercy that makes renewal possible. The living water of which Jesus speaks is not merely a temporary consolation. It is the gift of divine life, a grace that reaches beyond the passing satisfactions of this world and answers the deepest thirst of the human soul. In Christ, the weary find refreshment, the wounded discover healing, and those who have wandered are invited to return to the Father. But the encounter does not end at the well. Having recognized something extraordinary in Jesus, the Samaritan woman leaves her water jar behind and goes to her community. The woman who came alone becomes a witness, inviting others to encounter the One who has transformed her life. Herein lies the enduring message of this work. The grace we receive is never intended to remain hidden within ourselves. An encounter with Christ calls forth a response, transforming the heart and sending the faithful outward in love, service, and testimony. Ultimately, The Well is a meditation on the mercy of God and the living water offered through His Son. It invites every viewer to approach the Lord with an open heart, confident that He knows us completely, loves us mercifully, and calls us into the fullness of life. For the soul that comes to Christ thirsting for living water discovers not merely refreshment, but the promise of eternal life. Deacon Rudy Calsoncin (Ret.)
