Scriptural Foundation: Psalm 91:11 God commands his angels to guard his people. — Psalm 91:11 (paraphrase) Tribute to the Holy Angels honors the heavenly servants of God, whose presence throughout Sacred Scripture bears witness to divine providence. With its uplifted wings and sweeping movement, the central figure suggests both watchfulness and readiness: an angel sent not to draw glory to itself, but to carry out the will of the Lord. Psalm 91 speaks to the faithful heart seeking refuge beneath the protection of the Most High. Its assurance that God commands his angels to guard his people is not a promise that the Christian life will be free from trial. Rather, it is an invitation to trust that, even amid uncertainty, we do not walk beyond the reach of God’s loving care. The holy angels appear throughout salvation history as messengers, guardians, and ministers of the divine purpose. An angel announces the mystery of the Incarnation to Mary; angels proclaim the joy of Christ’s birth; and at the empty tomb they announce that the crucified Lord has risen. Their ministry continually points beyond itself to Jesus Christ, in whom God’s saving plan is fulfilled. Christian devotion to the angels is therefore never an alternative to worship of God. The angels are creatures, not divine beings, and their dignity comes from the One they serve. We honor them because their obedience, humility, and unceasing praise reveal something of the holiness of their Creator. Their ministry encourages us to remain attentive to God’s voice and willing to serve one another. As we contemplate this work, we may give thanks for the unseen assistance that accompanies the people of God, while placing our confidence above all in the Lord who sends it. The wings become a visual invitation to trust, the upward movement a call to praise, and the angelic figure a reminder that every faithful messenger directs our gaze toward heaven. May their faithful service lead us always to greater trust in the Lord. Deacon Rudy Calsoncin (Ret.) Prayer On Canvas Christian Foundation © 2026 Rudy Calsoncin. All rights reserved.
