Scriptural Foundation: Matthew 28:19 (NABRE) “... baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit ...” Tribute to the Holy Trinity invites the viewer into the mystery at the heart of Christian faith: one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Its interwoven forms and restless movements do not offer a diagram of the divine life. Rather, they evoke a communion beyond the reach of any single image, where distinction does not destroy unity and unity does not erase distinction. In the Gospel of Matthew, the risen Christ commands His disciples to go forth and baptize all nations in the one name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This sacred command reveals that the Trinity is not a distant theological abstraction. Every Christian enters the life of faith through this divine name. At Baptism, we are welcomed into the Church, made children of the Father in Christ, and given the gift of the Holy Spirit. The painting’s overlapping currents suggest movement without division. No single form contains the whole; each appears in relationship to the others. Such imagery can invite contemplation of the eternal communion of love that is God. Yet the mystery of the Trinity remains infinitely greater than any artistic representation. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is not the Father; nevertheless, they are not three gods, but one God. The Christian life unfolds within this mystery. We pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. In the Eucharistic liturgy, the Church offers her thanksgiving to the Father through Christ, and by the power of the Spirit the faithful are drawn more deeply into communion with God and one another. Our worship is therefore more than an earthly gathering: it is a response to the love that first called us into being. Before this work, the viewer is invited not to solve the mystery, but to stand before it with reverence. The Trinity is the beginning and end of our pilgrimage, the source of all love, and the eternal home toward which grace leads us. What faith confesses, the heart is invited to adore: the one God who eternally lives, loves, and draws His children into communion. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
